The hazardous and toxic nature of many solvents, in particular organic solvents that are extensively used in large scale for organic reactions have transformed a serious threat to the environment. Therefore, the design of solvent-free catalytic reaction has received considerable attention during recent times in the field of green synthesis. A solvent-free or solid state reaction may be accomplished using the reactants single or merge them in clays, zeolites, silica, alumina or other substrates. Esters, thioesters and amides are important and valuable compounds in the area of industry, medicine, pharmaceutical and heterocyclic chemistry. In this paper, various solventfree systems to synthesize esters, thioesters and amides via the acylation of alcohols, phenols, thiols and amines are described. In this review we summarized the activities presented mainly the recent years. reusable catalyst for the synthesis of esters and amides under solvent-free conditions (Scheme 5). 50 Scheme 3. Dendrimers are nanostructured ‘architectural motifs’ with a well‐tailored polymeric structure, symmetric tree‐like shape and the presence of several functional groups and inner cavities, and are of eminent interest in many biomedical applications such as drug delivery, gene transfection and imaging. In the work reported, reliable protocols for the synthesis of polyester‐based, hydrolysable, amphiphilic polycationic dendrimers were developed. A C‐18 hydrocarbon chain provided by a biocompatible fatty acid, stearic acid, and second‐ and third‐generation dendrons based on 2,2‐bis(hydroxymethyl)propionic acid were built on 2,2‐bis(hydroxymethyl)propanol and pentaerythritol as core molecules. αN‐BOC‐ω'N‐(NO2)‐l‐arginine alone, mixed with αN,ϵN‐di‐BOC‐l‐lysine or also with N,N′‐dimethylglycine and αN‐BOC‐methylglycine were successfully bound to the prepared polyester neutral scaffolds and, after the removal of protecting groups, five cationic dendrimers were obtained. Their structure was confirmed using NMR analysis and experimental molecular weight. Their buffer capacity, comparable to that of polyethyleneimines, was optimal, high viability percentage values were obtained from cytotoxicity assays and zeta potential and mean particle size were in the desired ranges. The synthesized nanostructured compounds that harmonize a multifunctional polycationic shell, a biodegradable uncharged polyester matrix and a C‐18 hydrophobic portion helpful for an improved hydrophilic–lipophilic balance in their structure embody all the fundamental features to be suitable for biomedical applications. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry

A Sustainable Synthesis of Functionalized Pyrrole Fused Coumarins under Solvent‐Free Conditions Using Magnetic Nanocatalyst and a New Route to Polyaromatic Indolocoumarins

A general and environmentally benign one‐pot method has been developed for the library synthesis of biologically important chromeno[4, 3‐b]pyrrol‐4(1H)‐one derivatives. A three‐component domino condensation of 4‐aminocoumrins, arylglyoxal monohydrates and various nucleophilic substrates, such as, arylamines, malononitrile, ethyl cyanoacetate and cyanoacetamide produced functionalized chromeno[4, 3‐b]pyrrol‐4(1H)‐ones in presence of magnetically separable Fe3O4@SiO2‐SO3H nanoparticles as solid acid catalyst under solvent free conditions. Furthermore, a two‐component condensation of 4‐aminocoumrins and arylglyoxal monohydrates furnished a series of hydroxy functionalized chromeno[4, 3‐b]pyrrol‐4(1H)‐ones under similar reaction conditions. The salient features of the present method are mild reaction conditions, reduced reaction time, elimination of hazardous solvents, good yield of the products, greater substrate scope and use of a magnetically separable and recyclable nanocatalyst. Moreover, it has been observed that a class of chromeno[4, 3‐b]pyrrol‐4(1H)‐one derivatives can be easily converted to biologically important indolo[3, 2‐c]coumarin derivatives in good yield through intramolecular thermal cyclization without using any catalyst.
