Abstract

One-Step Synthesis of Substituted α-Pyrones from Cyclobutenediones and Lithiated O-Silyl Cyanohydrins. -Lithiation of silylated cyanohydrins and subsequent addition reaction with cyclobutenediones is followed by 1,4-silyl migration and cyanide displacement. This results in formation of 4-acylcyclobutenones which undergo spontaneous ring expansion to α-pyrones.
