ChemInform Abstract: Photocatalytic Activities of Microcrystalline TiO2 Incorporated in Sheet Silicates of Clay.

Abstract: 033ChemInform Abstract Compared to those of TiO2 powder particles, showing the quantum size effect, TiO2 microcrystallites incorporated in the interlayer of montmorillonite having ca. 15-å pillar height show a ca. 0.58-eV blue shift in its absorption and fluorescence spectra. The difference in the excited energy levels between the two kinds of photocatalysts amounts to 0.36 eV, the TiO2/clay being higher than the TiO2 powder. The photocatalytic activities for decomposition of 2-propanol to give acetone and H2 … Show more

“…Many organic [11,12] or inorganic cations [13,14] are intercalated into the silicate layers of clays to synthesize diversified pillared materials. Of them, extensive concern has been focused on the TiO 2 pillared clay which can be applied to adsorb various organics from water and air [15][16][17][18].…”

“…However, fine particle sized photocatalyst dispersed in water to be treated by irradiation poses difficulties as separation of the catalyst by post-reaction filtration is tedious and costly. As a result, many researchers have examined methods for dispersing TiO 2 particles on solid support materials like glass, 1,2 optical fiber, 2,3 silica, 4 electrode, 5,6 clays, 7,8 stainless steel mesh, 9 and zeolites. [11][12][13] Zeolites due to their large surface areas, internal pore volume, unique uniform pores, and channel size [12][13][14][15][16][17][18] are interesting hosts to disperse semiconductor photocatalyst on their surfaces.…”
