ChemInform Abstract: The Pt Electrodeposition on PAN‐Based Carbon Fibers

Abstract: ChemInform Abstract from 0.5 M H2SO4 solution is studied using cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, and chronopotentiometry combined with SEM observation. Pt4+ is reduced at the C-fibers, produced by graphitization of polyacrylonitrile, in two well-defined two-electron irreversible steps. The deposition mechanism involves instantaneous nucleation with hemispherical growth. The Pt deposits from acid solutions are firmly attached on the fibers, exhibiting their catalytic activity for H2 and O2 evolution even a… Show more

“…A disproportionation reaction of Pt(II) species into Pt(0) and Pt(IV) species has also been included as a process taking place in the potential range of peak Ci,18 although the participation of this reaction is opened to discussion after the results for PAN-based carbon fiber electrodes. 19 Hence, in this work most of the efforts are focused on the investigation of possible Pt electrodeposition on HOPG in the potential range of the current plateau Cj.…”

“…could also occur as the equilibrium potential of reaction 2 is E°2 = 0.758 V (vs NHE) at 25 °C.30 However, under these circumstances the contribution of reaction 2 could be neglected as, for instance, the rate of this reaction in 1 M NaCl is 2 orders of magnitude lower than that of reaction l.31 Furthermore, in aqueous 1 X 10-3 M PtCl42' reaction 2 takes place only at potentials more negative than 0.53 V, i.e., in the potential range of peak C2. 19 Finally, a disproportionation of Pt(II) into Pt(0) and Pt-(IV) species may occur at HOPG in H2PtCl6 solution according to 2PtCl42"…”

“…Since a major breakthrough was achieved in the production process of carbon fibres prepared from organic precursor in the 60s, carbon fibre composites preparation process, protecting and improving the compatibility between carbon fibres and matrix by modification of carbon fibre surface become important. During the past few years, researchers coated inorganic non-metallic or metallic substances on carbon fibres for the surface modification by processes such as sol-gel method, chemical vapour deposition, physical sputtering, precursor impregnation paralysis method, electro and electroless plating, plasma spray, etc (Georgolios et al 1989;Abraham et al 1990;Matsumoto et al 1993;Severini et al 2002;Park and Kim 2005;Hackl et al 2006;Tang et al 2008;Tang and Kardos 2010), and achieved many important results. Among them, electroless plating is widely used in the surface modification of carbon fibres and carbon fibres composites preparation, with uniform thickness and low pinhole rate of coatings, simple equipment and convenient operation features (Li and Tu 2003).…”
