Chemistry and quality of groundwater in a coastal region of Andhra Pradesh, India

Abstract: The chemistry of groundwater in the coastal region between Chirala and Ongole of Andhra Pradesh, India shows pollution to varying extent. The relative contribution of ions in six zones divided based on TDS indicates unsuitability of groundwater here for drinking, irrigation and industrial use. The water is brackish except in first zone and further alkaline. TDS is less than 1,000 mg/L in first zone, while it is more in other zones. This classification of groundwater into zones is also investigated by hydrogeoc… Show more

“…Determination of physical, chemical and bacteriological quality of water is essential for assessing its suitability for various purposes like drinking, domestic, agricultural and industrial uses. A number of studies on groundwater quality with respect to drinking and irrigation purposes have been carried out in different parts of India (Durvey et al 1997;Agarwal and Jagetia 1997;Niranjan Babu et al 1997;Subba Rao et al 1999;Majumdar and Gupta 2000;Dasgupta and Purohit 2001;Khurshid et al 2002;Sujatha and Reddy 2003;Pulle et al 2005;Hussain et al 2005;Sunitha et al 2005;Subba Rao 2006). The study area is predominantly an agricultural zone with dense agricultural activities and also located near the coastal region.…”

“…Various diagrams have been developed over the years for visualization of water chemistry and they have been widely used by the researchers and practitioners. The first graphical technique has been proposed by [46] but, actually, the most popular diagrams are the Piper [47] and the Langelier-Ludwig square diagrams [48] which have been largely applied [49][50][51][52]. 2.4.…”
