Chemistry of SO2, H2S, and CH3SH on Carbide-Modified Mo(110) and Mo2C Powders:  Photoemission and XANES Studies

Abstract: The chemistry of SO2, H2S, and CH3SH on carbide-modified Mo(110) and powders of bulk Mo2C was studied using synchrotron-based high-resolution photoemission and X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES). These studies reveal that molybdenum carbide is very reactive toward sulfur-containing molecules, being able to break S−O, S−H, and S−C bonds at temperatures below 300 K. Upon adsorption of sulfur dioxide on molybdenum carbide at 150 or 300 K, there is dissociation of the adsorbate into S and O, and also … Show more

“…The photoemission studies were performed in a conventional ultrahigh-vacuum (UHV) chamber (base pressure *5 9 10 -10 Torr) located at the U7A beamline of the National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS) at Brookhaven National Laboratory [7,10,[18][19][20]. The chamber contains a hemispherical electron energy analyzer with multichannel detection, instrumentation for low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), and a quadrupole mass spectrometer.…”

“…The chemistry of SO 2 and CH 3 SH on carbide-modified Mo(110) and powders of bulk Mo 2 C was studied using photoemission and X-ray absorption spectroscopy [18]. These molybdenum carbides are quite reactive towards the S-containing molecules, being able to break the S-O bonds in SO 2 and the C-S bond in CH 3 SH at temperatures below 300 K. Thiophene is a typical test molecule in HDS studies [1].…”

“…They exhibit outstanding performance in hydrogenation [2], ammonia synthesis [3], hydrodesulfurization [4], hydrodenitrogenation [5], water-gas shift reaction [6], hydrocarbon isomerization [7], and methane reforming [8]. However, few literatures were reported about the fundamental studies on the properties of transitional metal carbide catalysts.…”

“…The oxidation from formal S 2) (sulfide) to formal S 6+ (sulfate) proceeds via intermediate sulfur oxidation state, e.g. the peak 3 in figure 6 recorded in FY mode can be attributed to SO 3 2) group [21], i.e. to formal S 4+ (sulfite).…”
