Chemistry of Tasmanian Inland Waters

Abstract: A few of Tasmania's several thousand lakes and rivers have been sampled in a preIiminary survey of water chemistry. They range in concentration from extremely dilute glacial lakes (TDS < I0 ppni) to hypersaline lagoons (TDS > 85";0), the majority being dilute (TDS < 50 ppm). The 3 mechanisms controlling water chemistry proposed by GIBBS (1970) are seen to operate and the 3 terminal water types showing precipitation-dominance, roclr-dominance and solubilitylimited composition are found, together with a range of … Show more

“…102. SEM of Prorocentrum playfairi, Lake Garcia (12) [from Croome & Tyler (1986a) Tasmania's surface waters have been classified on chemical criteria (Buckney & Tyler, 1973) and on underwater light climate (Bowling, Steane & Tyler, 1986), the two being congruent in large measure. In the latter case, the overwhelming determinant of lake type is the quantity of gilvin (Kirk, 1976) (=gelbstoff, colour).…”

“…On the western edge of the dolerite salinities are very low (K25-~ 10gScm-~), but not the most dilute in the world (Eilers et al, 1990). Further east, with less rainfall and higher evapo-transpiration, salinity values are higher (Buckney & Tyler, 1973a). This chemical dichotomy holds for lakes, almost all of which lie on dolerite or on the principal western rock types, but if rivers and creeks were included other outcrops, like dolomite, would show their influence (Fig.…”

“…As one would expect, montane lakes are of two principal types, depending on which side of the ecological dividing line they lie. Some, at least, have been minimally studied in recent years and there are both optical (Bowling, Steane & Tyler, 1986) and chemical (Buckney & Tyler, 1973a) typologies for them, the two showing a large measure of congruence.…”

“…3.1) are of glacial origin (Jennings and Banks 1958). The majority of these lakes have ionic composition consistent with aerosol sources deposited in the lake through both dry and wet deposition and originally relate to a seawater source (Buckney and Tyler 1973;Vanhoutte et al 2006). The major water-chemistry gradients are conductivity, pH and gilvin (i.e.…”
