Interesting ionic materials can be transformed into room temperature molten salts by combining them with polyether-tailed counterions such as polyether-tailed 2-sulfobenzoate (MePEG-BzSO3 -) and polyether-tailed triethylammonium (MePEG-Et3N+). Melts containing ruthenium hexamine, metal trisbipyridines, metal trisphenanthrolines, and ionic forms of aluminum quinolate, anthraquinone, phthalocyanine, and porphyrins are described. These melts exhibit ionic conductivities in the 7 × 10-5 to 7 × 10-10 Ω-1 cm-1 range, which permit microelectrode voltammetry in the undiluted materials, examples of which are presented.

Sensitization of TiO₂ by Phosphonate-Derivatized Proline Assemblies

Surface electrochemical and photoelectrochemical measurements on ITO (In(2)O(3):Sn) or TiO(2) of two proline assemblies are reported. Surface coverage on ITO of Pbp-pra(Ru(II)b(2)m)-OH(PF(6))(2) and Bpb-pra(Ru(II)b(2)m)-OCH(3)(CF(3)CO(2))(2) are (1.5-2.4) x 10(-)(10) mol/cm(2), comparable to monolayer coverages of (1.5-2.5) x 10(-)(10) mol/cm(2) for [Ru(bpy)(2)(4,4'-(CO(2)H)(2)bpy)](PF(6))(2) and [Ru(bpy)(2)(4,4'-(PO(3)H(2))(2)bpy)](Br)(2). Incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) measured in Gräztel-type photovoltaic cells are sensitive to subtle structural differences in the assemblies. IPCE values for Pbp-pra(Ru(II)b(2)m)-OH(PF(6))(2) and Bpb-pra(Ru(II)b(2)m)-OCH(3)(CF(3)CO(2))(2) are 2% and <0.1%, which are compared to 23% for both [Ru(bpy)(2)(4,4'-(PO(3)H(2))(2)bpy)](Br)(2) and [Ru(bpy)(2)(4,4'-(CO(2)H)(2)bpy)](PF(6))(2) under the same conditions.

A series of Ru(II) compounds and salts have been synthesized: [Ru(6-carboxylato-bpy)(2)] (5), [Ru(6-carboxylato-bpy)(tpy)]PF(6) (9), [Ru(tpy)(2)](PF(6))(2) (8), and [Ru(bpy)(2)(Pic)]PF(6) (11), where 6-carboxy-bpy (1) = 6-carboxy-2,2'-bipyridine, tpy (2) = 2,2':6',2"-terpyridine, and Pic = 2-carboxylatopyridine. The compounds have been characterized by NMR, electrospray mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), cyclic voltammetry, absorption and emission spectroscopy (at 100, 140, and 298 K), and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (complex 5). Complex 5 crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group P2(1)/n, formula RuC(22)H(14)N(4)O(4).C(2)H(5)OH, with a = 11.088(3) Å, b = 11.226(3) Å, c = 35.283(9) Å, beta = 91.41(2) degrees, and Z = 8. A linear dependence on the number of coordinated carboxylato groups and the electrochemical redox potentials was found, ca. 0.4 V lower reduction potential for the oxidation step (Ru(II/III)) per carboxylate group. Also, to the best of our knowledge, these are the first examples (9, 11) of mononuclear Ru(II) complexes containing a carboxypyridine-ruthenium moiety displaying any luminescence emission.
