Chemopreventive effect of selenium and Chinese medicinal herbs on N‐nitrosobis(2‐oxopropyl)amine‐induced hepatocellular carcinoma in Syrian hamsters

Abstract: Background/Aims: Oxidative DNA damage by reactive oxygen species is involved in the process of liver carcinogenesis. To test the hypothesis that a remedy containing Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi (Sb) and Bupleurum scorzonerifolfium Willd (Bs) (Sb/Bs remedy) modulates hepatic neoplastic growth, BOP (Nnitrosobis(2-oxopropyl)amine)-induced liver cancers in hamsters were established. Methods: Parameters such as survival rate, tumour area, tumour foci, 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), caspase-3, transforming grow… Show more

“…From 25 to 50 weeks of induction, both micronodular and macronodular HCC occurred. These serial events are consistent with the development of human hepatocarcinogenesis (40), highlighting the potential application of this animal model for HCC research.…”

“…A study investigating the chemopreventive effects of sodium selenite (Na 2 SeO 3 ) in Syrian hamsters on N-nitrosobis(2-oxopropyl)amine-induced liver tumors determined that low doses of selenium prevented liver cancer [193]. A review by Whanger indicates that of the greater than 100 animal studies of selenium effects on tumor incidence, two-thirds showed selenium anticarcinogenic effects [212].…”

“…ZaoLian mixture, a formula for detoxification, dissolving stasis, strengthening spleen, and soothing liver, may inhibit hepatocarcinogenesis and protect liver function [27] . Sb/Bs remedy, containing Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi (Sb) and Bupleurum scorzonerifolfium Willd (Bs), suppressed Nnitrosobis(2oxopropyl)amine (BOP) induced liver tumours, increased serum tumor necrosis factor (TNF) alpha and TGFbeta1, decreased 8OHdG expression, and increased caspase3 and apoptosis [28] .…”
