Chemoprophylaxis of fascioliasis with triclabendazole

Abstract: In a field experiment, moderate to heavy natural concomitant infections with immature and mature Fasciola hepatica were treated with triclahendazole at a dose rate of 10 mg/kg and an efficiency of 99.8% was achieved. Subsequent treatments of all susceptible farm animals at the same dose rate at intervals of eight to eleven weeks were carried out for 14 months; no patent infections could be detected in sheep and cattle during the whole period. Evidence is presented that pasture contamination with liver fluke wa… Show more

“…The reduction of the incidence of fasciolosis is consistent with other strategic dosing trials in cattle and sheep (Boray et al 1985;Fawcett 1990;Parr and Gray 2000). The high proportion of animals passing Fasciola eggs in cattle treated two times a year indicated the importance of an additional treatment at the middle of the dry season.…”

“…In the present study, the group treated with netobimin passed eggs in the faeces throughout the experiment but, with triclabendazole, egg-output ceased during 2±8 wpt. These results agree with those of Boray et al (1985) and Stans®eld et al (1987) for sheep infected with F. hepatica and treated with triclabendazole.…”

“…Triclabendazole (Fasinex@, Ciba-Geigy, Switzerland) is a new benzimidazole compound which has been shown to exhibit high efficacy against all stages of Fasciola hefiatica and Fasciola gigantica in sheep, goats and cattle (Boray et al, 1981;Wolff el al., 1983;Turner et al, 1984). Like other sulphide benzimidazoles, triclabendazole has been found to be oxidized to the sulphoxide and sulphone metabolites in sheep (Mohammed-Ali et al, 1986;Hennessy el al., 1987) and cattle (Bogan et al, 1985).…”
