ChemPoker

Abstract: In chemistry classes, two of the first things students typically learn are the names and symbols for the chemical elements. Oral recitation is one strategy commonly used to teach this information, but games can make the learning process more enjoyable for students. A game is described that can help students learn the name and symbol of elements, periodic trends, and to identify groups and periods in the periodic table in a fun environment. This game, ChemPoker, is adapted from the card game poker. ChemPoker is… Show more

“…Educational games should challenge students (Hamari, 2016;Kavak, 2012) while allowing them to observe, explore, and manipulate a wide range of variables and receive immediate feedback on their actions (Lester et al, 2014). In the "Find invasive seaweed" game, several learning challenges can be found (from correctly identifying the different species of seaweed to answering specific questions about them), while students can directly manipulate, observe and explore the main learning target: invasive seaweed.…”

“…Usually, educational activities require some intellectual effort, but at the same time, participants should be able to experience enjoyment and motivation (Khan & Pearce, 2015). Most educational games focus on the teaching process of a specific subject (Antunes et al, 2012;Barclay et al, 2011;Franco-Mariscal et al, 2015;Gutiérrez, 2014;Kavak, 2012;Lester et al, 2014;Martí-Centelles & Rubio-Magnieto, 2014;Russell, 1999). When playing "Find invasive seaweed," students can learn about marine science by acquiring knowledge about IAS and the importance of the marine environment.…”

“…Card games are a widely used approach for that purpose with results that confirm that they are a powerful method to stimulate the students; and in particular they have been used to teach the periodic table. [12][13][14][15][16] However, the main disadvantage of these card games is that they only focus on the most significant elements. These games also fail in teaching the position of elements in the periodic table as they mainly focus on the correlation between names and symbols of the elements.…”
