Chickens productivity selection affects immune system genes

Abstract: The quantitative trait loci associated with the immune properties of chickens are of interest from the point of view of obtaining animals resistant to infectious agents using marker-assisted selection. In the process of selecting markers for genomic selection in broiler-type chickens, a non-standard genotype frequency of the RACK1 gene allele (SNP Gga_rs15788101) in the B5 line of broiler-type chicken cross Smena 8 was identified and it was suggested that this gene was involved in selection. Therefore, it was … Show more

“…The significantly increased OCR, a measure of mitochondrial respiration, observed in the L8, dual-purpose line (inbred line since 1925) compared with modern commercial layer and broiler lines was an unanticipated outcome (Figure 5A) that may provide insight into consequences of intense genetic selection in modern commercial breeds. It has been established that selection for economic-focused traits in broilers has reduced diversity of immune system genetics (33) and that laying hens selected for feed efficiency show reduced antibody response to Newcastle disease virus (10). However, given that the L8 is highly inbred, its genetics is expected to be primarily fixed at the alleles in highest frequency at its founding.…”

“…Inbreeding also significantly affect the transcription of immune cell genes in their offspring [ 149 ]. In artificial breeding conditions, the genetic variability of coding elements of the chicken immune system is degenerated, which can decrease resistance to various diseases [ 150 ]. In the host, ALV has two states, persistent viremia, and intermittent viremia [ 151 , 152 ].…”

“…In addition, there is growing interest in deciphering the genetic parameters underlying the immune response. More and more data is accumulating on the negative impact of selection for economic traits on the immune system of chickens due to a decrease in the variability of genes encoding elements of the immune system [22,23]. SNP typing of three genes was carried out, the DMA (major histocompatibility complex, class II, DM alpha), RACK1 (receptor for activated C kinase 1) and CD1B (CD1b molecule) responsible for an increased IgY titer in line B5 of broiler meat cross Smena 8.…”
