Chigger mites (Acariformes: Trombiculidae) of Iran

Abstract: Chigger mites of Iran have been revised based on examination of type materials in the collection of Zoological Museum of Moscow University and reference data. Hitherto, 85 species of trombiculids were recorded in Iran; synonymy, diagnoses, data on depositories of type specimens, lists of hosts and collection localities are given for each species. Original measurements of holotypes or paratypes are provided for 46 species. Four new combinations are proposed: Ornithogastia merops (Vercammen-Grandjean, Rohde and … Show more

“…According to the available taxonomic literature (books and papers) and taxonomic keys, the identification for each chigger specimen was done under a high power lens (10 × 40) and oil immersion lens (10 × 100) of the microscope, based on the careful observation and measurement of the related taxonomic structures of chiggers (see Table 2 and Fig. 2 in “Results”) [ 25 , 49 , 50 , 53 ]. Following identification of animal hosts and chiggers, all Chinese mole shrews ( A. squamipes ), together with chiggers on the body surface of shrews, were chosen as the target of the present study.…”

“…The taxonomic status of chigger mites is controversial. In some of the literature, all the chigger mites have been grouped into one family, the family Trombiculidae, in the suborder Prostigmata under the order Trombidiformes of the superorder Actinotrichida (or Acariformes) [ 25 , 34 , 50 ]. In other articles, however, the chigger mites have been placed in two families (Trombiculidae and Leeuwenhoekiidae) or three families (Trombiculidae, Leeuwenhoekiidae and Walchiidae) under the order Trombidiformes of the superorder Acariformes [ 4 , 37 , 53 , 58 ].…”

“…However, R. tanezumi trapped in this study were all infested with chiggers (prevalence = 100%); some individuals were even parasitized with close to 2,000 chiggers. Because host is required in only a single life stage (larva) of trombiculid mite, and the L. deliense chigger can utilize a very wide range of host species (Stekolnikov, 2021), introduced hosts can be infested with no fewer chiggers, particularly when rodents were introduced from habitats unfavorable for chiggers (paved areas on mainland) to their favorable habitats (forest on island).…”

“…Rodents are the primary hosts of chiggers (Harrison and Audy, 1951;Traub and Wisseman, 1974;Kawamura et al, 1995), including L. deliense (Stekolnikov, 2021). If chiggers are introduced, whether accompanied R. tanezumi or other exotic host species, their abundance will increase following raised number and habitat expansion of R. tanezumi.…”
