“…In what remains a unique study in this area, Gath (1968) interviewed 50 doctors who had referred patients to the Children's Department at the Maudsley Hospital, It was not surprising that the majority of the referring doctors regarded the children as psychiatrically disturbed and many of their families as being disrupted, but, more interestingly, the study also identified other issues of relevance to the referral. In particular, the doctors had been impressed by the nature of the parental reaction to the child, exemplified by anxiety, distress, resentment or anger, and by the gradual worsening in the child's chronic behavioural problem, noted in nearly two-thirds of the children.…”
