“…Differences in developmental timing (which refers to when CM occurs in relation to critical and sensitive periods of the nervous system and body development [ 23 , 24 ]) have been linked to different brain structural volume [ 25 ], physiological and cognitive outcomes [ 26 , 27 ]. CM experiences that span several developmental periods, including both early and later childhood stages, predict a cascade of internalizing and externalizing symptoms in childhood that eventuate in greater symptoms of anxiety, depression, substance use disorder, and antisocial personality disorder in emerging adulthood [ 28 ].…”

“…Although our sample size did not allow us to explore the differential impact of early life adversity type and timing on the relationships among depression and anxiety with current anger, our findings align with relevant recent studies. Civilian studies have shown that type and timing of early life adversity strongly relate with depressive and anxiety symptoms rather than those of PTSD (Russotti et al, 2021; Schalinski et al, 2016). Studies also have linked types of early life adversity, particularly those aligned with physical neglect, with depressive symptoms and mediated by reward processing, although PTSD was not considered within the model (Dennison et al, 2019).…”

“…Since then, more than fifty studies have been conducted to replicate this finding, however, not all of them have achieved their aims[ 11 ]. G×E has been suggested to predict MDD in individuals exposed to negative environmental factors[ 12 , 13 ]. Similarly, many studies have found that a functional SNP within FKBP5 interacted with environments to predict MDD[ 14 - 17 ].…”
