Child Sexual Assault as a Risk Factor for Mental Disorders Among Women

Abstract: A community sample of 391 adult women was screened for a history of sexual assault during childhood and assessed for lifetime and current mental disorders using a structured victimization history interview and the Diagnostic Interview Schedule. One third of the women had been victims of rape, molestation, or sexual assault not involving physical contact prior to the age of 18 years. “…Representative of many other studies, a community-based study of almost 2000 adult women revealed that those with a history of childhood sexual or physical abuse, but not adulthood rape or physical assault, exhibited more symptoms of depression and anxiety and had more frequently attempted suicide than women without a history of childhood abuse (McCauley et al 1997). Syndromal major depression and anxiety disorders, including panic disorder and PTSD, are frequent in adults with a history of childhood abuse (e.g., Felitti et al 1998;Mullen et al 1996;Saunders et al 1992;Stein et al 1996). Similar findings have been reported for other instances of early life stress.…”

“…The negative impact of CSA is pervasive from the time of abuse in childhood extending into adulthood. CSA is associated with adultonset depression, suicide and engagement in high-risk behaviors (Fergusson et al, 2008;Saunders et al, 1992;Browne & Finkelhor, 1986 ), substance abuse, paranoid reactions (Kendler et al, 2000;Herman 1981) and borderline personality disorders, especially in females (Finkelhor, 1984;McLean and Gallop, 2003).…”
