Childbearing among Polish migrant women and their descendants in Sweden: an origin-destination country approach

Abstract: This paper examines the childbearing behaviour of Polish migrant women and their descendants in Sweden. Also considering stayers in the country of origin, we rely on a country-of-origin and country-of-destination approach in a careful examination regarding the relevance of three hypotheses on migrant fertility: the socialisation, selection, and adaptation hypotheses. We analyse the transitions to first and second births based on a piecewise exponential model, using Swedish register data and the Polish Generati… Show more

“…Most studies have compared the fertility of the first and second generations with that of the native population in the host country, although some have compared the behaviours of immigrants with those of non-immigrants in their origin country (e.g. Baykara-Krumme and Milewski 2017 ; Puur et al 2017 ; Lindström et al 2022 ). Although many studies have included partnership status as a control variable, they have not explored the interrelationships between entire partnership and childbearing trajectories.…”

“…Concurrently, it is established that in urban settings, the cost of childbearing is likely to be higher (Mace, 2008). These observations dovetail with a longstanding debate about the appropriate reference category when studying migrant populations (Baykara-Krumme & Milewski, 2017;Guveli & Spierings, 2022;Lindström et al, 2022). Without delving deeply into this matter, we leverage the extensive size of our data to rectify potential imbalances between native-born and migrant descendants (Firebaugh, 2018, Chapter 5).…”

“…We also separate out those women who (5) have another child, or (6) emigrate. 3 We build up the variable with the categories being mutually exclusive (a similar approach can be found in Andersson and Scott, 2005, 2007; Lindström et al, 2021).…”
