Children and the outdoor environment

Abstract: In this article we will discuss the outdoor environment for younger children with the help of two different concepts. The first concept, affordance, is well known in the discussion about outdoor environments. What the affordance in the outdoor environment is perceived as can differ between actors. How the affordance is used can be another source of interesting difference between actors. We would also like to bring in an additional concept: private and public space. “…Salah satu manfaat utama pembelajaran 3 outdoor study adalah membimbing dan mendorong siswa untuk melakukan pengamatan. Selain itu, dapat memotivasi siswa untuk meningkatkan kesadaran terhadap lingkungan alam (Niklasson & Sandberg, 2010).Pembelajaran outdoor study dapat meningkatkan proses pembelajaran ketika pertemuan dengan alam menjadi holistik, di mana pengetahuan dan pengalaman berinteraksi dengan semua panca indera. “…Gibson (1979) defines an affordance as a latent possibility for significant and important action in an object or environment as seen by the individual. As maintained by Niklasson & Sandberg (2010) the challenge for preschool staff is to create an outdoor environment that is both a private and public space with interesting affordances. Even Waters and Maynard's (2010) study about affordance points to the importance of understanding children's perceptions and, if necessary, making certain functions prominent for children to encourage their understanding of the environment.…”

“…Today's children grow up with many activities that are conducive to sitting still indoors such as watching TV and video, and playing computer games, as well as organized activities that sometimes are considered more important than playing outdoors (Sandberg, 2003). However children enjoy exploring what is going on in their surroundings -climbing slopes, encountering animals, shouting, running, and jumping (Niklasson & Sandberg, 2010). Media and outdoor activities do not need to be mutually exclusive, however.…”

“…The outdoor environment affords spaces for social and individual activities. The spaces that the children mention and use can be analyzed and discussed also from a private and public aspect (Halldén, 2006;Niklasson, 2007;Niklasson & Sandberg, 2010;Wikström, 2007). An outdoor environment is often public, but there can be places that are private.…”
