CHIME: A Metadata-Based Distributed Software Development Environment

Abstract: Abstract. We introduce CHIME, the Columbia Hypermedia IMmersion Environment, a metadata-based information environment, and describe its potential applications for internet and intranet-based distributed software development. CHIME derives many of its concepts from Multi-User Domains (MUDs), placing users in a semi-automatically generated 3D virtual world representing the software system. Users interact with project artifacts by "walking around" the virtual world, where they potentially encounter and collaborat… Show more

“…According to Sarma [38] presented two development environments to support collaborative software engineering: GENESIS (GEneralised eNvironment for procEsS management in cooperative Software Engineering) and OPHELIA (Open Platform and metHodologies for devELopment tools IntegrAtion in a distributed environment). Dossick et al [42] propose CHIME, a semiautomatically generated 3D virtual world representing the software system. “…Learning is essentially a social activity and is of paramount importance in engineering projectbased courses, where a high degree of cooperation is required [11]. The Columbia Hypermedia IMmersion Environment (CHIME) system [8] [9], created by the Programming Systems Lab (PSLhttp://www.psl.cs.columbia.edu) at Columbia University, was designed as a framework for distributed software development environments. CHIME's users would be software project team members who might be geographically dispersed, but could be virtually collocated within the same "room" or adjoining "rooms" of a MUD-like 3D virtual world.…”

“…CHIME environment upon startup -prompt for sources that need to be visualizedOur solution employs multiple extensible techniques that incorporate the advantages of the previous work on collaborative virtual environments. CHIME[8] [9] is a metadata based information management and visualization environment, created to serve as a homogenous environment for heterogeneous applications and data for internet and intranet-based distributed software development. It has further been extended to serve as a framework that aims at managing and organizing information.…”
