China’s Belt and Road Initiative: A Global Model for an Evolving Approach to Sustainable Regional Development

China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is a cornucopia of international projects that offer mammoth opportunities for more economic cooperation and deeper regional integration primarily among emerging economies. BRI is providing new drivers of sustainable economic growth in China and of cross-border trade, along with the reimagined land and “Maritime Silk Road”. The initiative focuses on restoring global balance and on expanding universally beneficial and inclusive relationships. This article argues that the forces of globalization are so pivotal to Eurasia, where development opportunities can propel the region toward a more comprehensive socioeconomic integration, that governments in that region need to provide more support that ensures the continuing success of BRI. In essence, BRI is a critical tool for peaceful development that is resulting in massive investments in infrastructure, that is facilitating economic development, and that is promoting shared governance. This article provides theoretical perspectives on BRI as a beachhead for sustainable regional development. It also highlights BRI programs and projects that have emerged as an internal and external policy framework for an openly inclusive “win–win” cooperation model based on shared development and on communities of shared interests.

The Impact of Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures and Technical Barriers to Trade on Imports of China with Partner Countries

The aim of this research is to analyze the impact of initiation of SPS and TBT by China for its import, during 1995 to 2018. Sanitary and Phytosanitary Agreement and Technical Barrier to Trade by the World Trade Organization have restricted the Chinese trade. In general, it is perceived that non-tariff measure barricade trade. Using the PPML estimation process to manage the zero import flow, and overdispersion in data of China depend on the gravity model. Results witness that GDP of China and partners, tariff, exchange rate, and distance are core determinants; SPS and TBT initiated and levied by China have affected imports from the WTO members. Results states that China has initiated SPS and TBT, hence country has experienced lower imports. The study also depicts comparative analysis of Chines initiated SPS and TBT effects on import from the high income, upper middle, lower middle, and low income countries. SPS and TBT are equally good as tariff, but China should focus more on NTMs because tariff would decline gradually in WTO regime.

Post‐spillover effects of China's integration on Pakistan Stock Exchange

The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) strategic partnership with the Chinese consortium shifted trends and transition patterns from global to Chinese exchanges. Any substantial changes in these markets created a significant impact on the PSX. After the partnership with the Chinese consortium, Pakistan's mean returns and price volatility dynamics have shifted toward the regional exchanges, connectivity, and alliances, which has increased regional integration. Any systematic change in trading policies and framework of partner exchanges may substantially impact the trading dynamics and volume of the Pakistan stock market and local investors. This changing behavior will enhance financial synergies in the Pakistan stock market's trading capacity by bringing Chinese cross‐listed IPOs and portfolio investment and financial vulnerabilities in exchange rate risk and volatility spillover effects from partner exchanges.
