The discourse has attempted to explore various dimensions of Chinese diplomacy, such as Confucius institutes (Hartig 2012(Hartig , 2014Liu 2019;Pan 2013;Shuto 2018); translation (Jiang 2021); museum diplomacy (Wang 2018); panda diplomacy (Hartig 2013), international higher education (Mulvey 2019), cinema (Becard and Filho 2019), image management (Hartig 2019) and engagement (Safdar 2021).…”

“…Besides, there has been little public or academic criticism of the CIs in Africa (King, 2017). Although the CI has been widely discussed in the context of cultural diplomacy (Liu, 2008(Liu, , 2019, public diplomacy (Hartig, 2015;d'Hooghe, 2007), or soft power (Lo and Pan, 2016;Zhou and Luk, 2016;Hubbert, 2014;Yang, 2010), mainly with case studies in Western countries, there have been few studies on the CIs in Africa and the existing studies only focus on one African CI or CIs in one African country (Procopio, 2015;Wheeler, 2014;Hartig, 2014;Stambach and Kwayu, 2017). There is a lack of systematic research that assesses African CIs in general and investigates the role of this institute in a wider context of China's foreign policy.…”
