Chinese Medical Injections for Acute Exacerbation of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: A Network Meta-analysis

Abstract: Background The World Health Organization has indicated that chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) may become the third leading cause of death by 2030. Acute exacerbation of COPD (AECOPD) is an important process in clinical treatment. Recent studies have shown that Chinese medical injections (CMI) are effective against AECOPD, but the effective difference among different CMIs remains unclear. The aim of this network meta-analysis (NMA) is to compare the therapeutic effect of various CMIs. … Show more

“…10 About 80–90% of acute exacerbations experienced by patients with COPD in China are caused by respiratory tract infections. 11 Therefore, many clinical scholars have proposed the use of the PIC window as the switching point. 12 , 13 When the patient’s pulmonary infection is effectively controlled, the condition is effectively relieved, and the patient can gradually resume spontaneous breathing.…”

“… 8 , 9 Hence, early diagnosis and intervention are crucial for preventing AECOPD. 10 Previously, FEV1/FVC and FEV1 were used as predicted values to assess the degree of airflow limitation in AECOPD. 11 , 12 However, in real world, patients with AECOPD can often not complete the pulmonary function test or even though they are reluctant to complete the test, the results are not credible.…”

“…[8][9][10] As an innovative formulation, Chinese herbal injection has been widely employed in the treatment of COPD due to its high bioavailability and rapid action. [11] Danhong injection (DHI) is a commonly used multi-herb Chinese herbal injection with satisfactory efficacy in treating COPD, which was composed of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge (Danshen in Chinese) and Carthamus tinctorius L. (Honghua in Chinese). Accumulating clinical studies supported the therapeutic effects of DHI in treating COPD or AECOPD, and a meta-analysis was conducted based on 23 randomized controlled trials with 2059 patients to evaluate the influence of DHI in treating COPD.…”
