Chiral Capillary Electrophoresis of Amphetamine-Type Stimulants

Abstract: Amphetamine-type stimulants (ATS), having one or more asymmetric carbons, are important targets in forensic science field. For chiral analysis, capillary electrophoresis (CE) has advantages over other chromatographic methods, especially, in fastness, resolution, cost performance and simplicity. This review summarizes chiral separation techniques of ATS using CE with UV detection or CE/mass spectrometry mainly by the present authors' research group.

“…Although analyses of MA and its related compounds commonly use GC-MS and LC-MS(-MS) [1][2][3], CE has many advantages especially when chiral analysis is required; CE is fast and cost effective, and gives highresolution separation of target compounds, and chiral separation can be easily accomplished by adding a chiral selector to the BGE [22]. For chiral analysis of MA and its related compounds in human specimens, CE should gain more popularity.…”

“…Besides, MA has an asymmetric carbon in its structure and thus exists two enantiomers, ( S )‐(+)‐MA and ( R )‐(–)‐MA. Almost all MA distributed in streets includes ( S )‐MA, because ( S )‐MA is 5–10 times more potent than ( R )‐MA with respect to its effect on the central nervous system . On the other hand, it should be noted that some legal drugs are metabolized and change to ( R )‐MA.…”

“…They have been among the most popular illegal psychotropic drugs since the mid-1980s. Recently, for identification and determination of MDMA, various investigation methods such as HPLC [21,22], displacement of anti- bodies [23], high-speed chronoamperometry [24], gas chromatography [25], and capillary electrophoresis [26] have been reported. There has been a growing tendency among Iranian youth for the abuse of ecstasy tablets during the past decade.…”
