Chiral symmetry and the nucleon structure functions

Abstract: The flavor asymmetry of the sea quark distribution as well as the unexpectedly small quark spin fraction of the nucleon are two outstanding discoveries recently made in the physics of deep-inelastic structure functions. We evaluate here the corresponding quark distribution functions within the framework of the chiral quark soliton model, which is an effective quark model of baryons maximally incorporating the most important feature of low energy QCD, i.e. the chiral symmetry and its spontaneous breakdown. It i… Show more

“…By now, various effective models of QCD in the low energy region have employed the soliton picture of the baryon: the Skyrme model [4,5,6,7,8,9], the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model [10,11,12] and the chiral quark soliton model (CQSM) [13,14,15,16]. The static properties (mass, magnetic moment) [17,18,19] and the quark distribution functions [20,21,22] of the baryon have been studied by means of these models. Here, the baryon appears as a rotational band of the soliton [5].…”

“…The effects are large, perhaps too large for favorable comparison with experiment, and soliton rotation was not considered in the derivation (Wakamatsu and Kubota, 1998). While the alternative of merely neglecting the support problem is not meritorious, the prescription of Eq.…”

“…• In the chiral-quark soliton model [124,125], QCD at the large N c limit becomes an effective theory of mesons with the baryons appearing as solitons. Quarks are described by single particle wave functions, which are solutions of the Dirac equation in the field of the background pions.…”
