Abstract:A straightforward route to chiral Ag I and Ru II complexes with phenanthrene-fused N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands is described. The chiral imidazole derivative 1 was prepared in high yield by a simple one-pot reaction starting from commercially available 9,10-phenanthrenequinone. Imidazolium salts 2 and 3 were obtained by alkylation of 1 with alkyl bromides and subsequent anion exchange with Amberlyst A21 resin. Deprotonation with KOtBu led to the correspond-

Copper(I) complexes with phenanthro‐annulated N‐heterocyclic carbene ligands were prepared by reaction of imidazolium salts with copper(I) oxide. Transmetalation of the copper complexes with [RhCl(cod)]2 in usual solvents like CH2Cl2 led to an equilibrium between the reactants and the products. For rhodium complexes 4 and 5 this equilibrium could be shifted to the product side by carrying out the reaction in acetonitrile. The ester functionalized rhodium complex 6 was prepared in a two phase mixture of chloroform and aqueous CaCl2 starting from copper complex 3c. The rhodium complexes were characterized by NMR and X‐ray measurements.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
