Abstract: Ectopic teeth occur because of failure of the first branchial cleft to close during development and are found mostly in young horses. Such dentigerous cysts are often located at the base of the ear, forming a notable swelling with a fistula, as it was the case with the two year old Iceland mare «Runa». In order to confirm the diagnosis, x-ray images were taken, which is also necessary to locate the ectopic tooth correctly. While operating, the whole cystic membrane should be removed and it is important to prev… Show more

“…In some cases, radiographs were sufficient for diagnosis (Easley et al., 2010), especially when oblique projections are used (Ebling et al., 2009) or contrast medium was injected into the draining tract (Gaughan, 2010). Other authors recommend a CT examination as the diagnostic modality of choice (Barakzai & Dixon, 2012; Bartmann & Bienert‐Zeit, 2012; Smith et al., 2012) because smaller dental structures may be missed on radiographs (Dicht et al., 2011). In the two cases presented here, CT in combination with positive contrast sinography was the superior imaging modality to identify the dentigerous cyst with exostosis and for surgical planning.…”

“…This is usually observed in atypical polyodontias, especially around the ear region. Often, the dentigerous cyst is characterised by the formation of draining tracts [ 6 ].…”

“…In the described case, the cyst did not involve any vascular or nervous structures. During these surgical interventions, especially hemorrhage or iatrogenic damage to nerves and vessels may negatively impact prognosis [ 6 ]. In the current case, no complications occurred.…”
