Chitosan-clay nanocomposite as a drug delivery system of ibuprofen

Abstract: Chitosan/montmorillonite nanocomposite films were prepared by the solvent evaporation method to immobilize the drug ibuprofen (IBU) and delay its release in a medium that simulates the environment of the gastrointestinal tract. The effects of montmorillonite, at different mass proportions (10, 20, and 50%), on the morphological and physical properties of the films were studied. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), degree of… Show more

“…The film with 10% clay released the drug in a controlled pattern. [ 120 ] Ternary blend films prepared from chitosan, polyvinylpyrrolidine, and guar gum crosslinked with sodium polyphosphate were tested for the release of ciproflaxocin hydrochloride in various buffers mimicking the human body conditions. Controlled release of the drug was found to be excellent in simulated intestinal fluid and phosphate buffer solutions.…”

“…Common biodegradable polymers are polyethylene glycol (PEG), chitosan (CS), poly- ε -caprolactone (PCL), soy protein, and copolymers of polyglycolide, polylactic acid (PLA), poly-3-hydroxybutyrate, polyglycolic acid (PGA), and alginate [ 4 ]. Chitosan is the second most abundantly found polysaccharide in nature and is used to design systems for drug delivery [ 5 ]. Chitosan (CS) possesses much importance because of its nontoxicity, biocompatibility, and biodegradability [ 6 ], and it can be synthesized from chitin [ 7 ].…”
