Chitosan Sponge/Cu–WO3–x Composite for Photodynamic Therapy of Wound Infection

Abstract: One of the potential treatments for bacterial wound infections is photodynamic therapy. WO 3−x semiconductor materials can generate reactive oxygen species when exposed to light, which can inactivate bacteria. In this work, we improved their photocatalytic performance by doping WO 3−x with Cu. The wound dressing was prepared by loading Cu−WO 3−x into a highly biocompatible chitosan sponge. The composite sponge dressing showed significant inactivation of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, and in vitro … Show more

“…Au@ZIF-8 had the capability of photocatalysis, which can kill bacteria in contact with the wound surface by producing ROS under the irradiation of visible light [99]. Xing et al prepared a chitosan sponge hydrogel coated with copper doped WO 3-x semiconductor material, which also had the same bactericidal mechanism (Figure 11) [100].…”

“…The final results of the swelling rate of CuO@BER/BH were higher than 400%, indicating that the hydrogel had excellent water absorption ability and can rapidly absorb the exudate of the wound, which although is not the primary issue in most of the diabetic wounds. 28 The experimental results revealed a higher swelling rate of the BH hydrogel, which was possibly attributed to the detachment of the nanoparticles from the CuO@BER/BH hydrogel during the measurement, causing a significant weight loss and a lower calculated swelling rate in comparison to the BH hydrogel. In the stability experiment (Figure S2), the BH and CuO@BER/ BH hydrogels had good stability in neutral and weakly alkaline solutions and exhibited the lowest stability in weakly acidic solutions.…”

“…7,8 Since PDT was proposed, a great number of PSs have been synthesized, 9 including but not limited to porphyrin derivatives, 10 boron dipyrromethene derivatives, 11−13 biological dyes, 14−17 and metal−organic complexes. 18,19 Generally, PDT is accompanied by the PS being initially photoexcited into a singlet state. This singlet PS then transforms into a triplet state through intersystem crossing.…”

“…Photodynamic therapy (PDT), referring to the generation of highly toxic reactive oxygen species (ROS) by photosensitizer (PS) under light irradiation, has played an important role in the treatment of various types of diseases, , including malignant tumors, vascular-related diseases, and microorganism infections. , Since PDT was proposed, a great number of PSs have been synthesized, including but not limited to porphyrin derivatives, boron dipyrromethene derivatives, biological dyes, and metal–organic complexes. , Generally, PDT is accompanied by the PS being initially photoexcited into a singlet state.
