Chlorhexidine gel and Steradent® employed in cleaning dentures

Abstract: It was the purpose of the study to test the efficacy of brushing with a 1% chlorhexidine gel or a commercial solution cleanser (Steradent) in preventing formation of plaque on the fitting surface of new dentures. The study group consisted of 74 denture wearers with denture stomatitis who were assigned randomly to one of four treatment groups, testing either the chlorhexidine gel, a placebo gel, Steradent, or a placebo solution. The experiment was started immediately after denture treatment was completed. The e… Show more

“…Budtz-Jörgensen and Bertram 11 proposed a simple index to grade plaque coverage on the denture fi tting surface: excellent -none or only a few spots of plaque; fair -<50% denture base covered; and poor ->50% denture base covered. A slightly more sensitive method was described in 1978 14 where the amount of denture plaque on the fi tting surface was graded 0 = non-visible, 1 + = less than one third covered, 2 + = one third to two thirds covered, and 3 + = more than two thirds covered. Augsberger and Elahi 12 developed a well-used index for…”

“…In clinical trials to test the effect of different cleansing agents on the removal of denture plaque, the distribution of plaque on the fitting surface of maxillary dentures has been measured by means of ranking scales in which the scores have been operationalized in terms of plaque coverage (2,4,5). It may be difficult to provide these scores with precise operational definitions, which in turn may increase the probability for random error.…”
