Chloride-Driven Chemical Vapor Transport Method for Crystal Growth of Transition Metal Dichalcogenides

Abstract: Single crystals of Mo and Ta dichalcogenides, MX2 (M = Mo, Ta and X = S, Se, Te), have been grown by the chemical vapor transport method using a novel transport reaction that involves a mixture of M, MCl5 and X as a source. The article reports the details of the growth method and the characterization of the single crystals

“…The selection of the vapor transport agent is therefore a critical point that must be carefully taken into account for growing crystals of transition metal dichalcogenides. We have recently investigated the use of transition metal chlorides as effective transport agents for growing some of these compounds [13]. Similarly to MoSe 2 , TaX 2 crystals were grown using TaCl 5 .…”

“…S.Y.Hu [7] utilized CVT process with Br 2 as a transporting agent grow large size MoSe 2 single crystals. The maximum size are about 10mm×10mm in surface area and 2mm in thickness.Alberto ubaldini [8] used four different transport agents:I 2 , NH 4 Cl, NH 4 Br and NH 4 I for preparing single crystals of MoSe 2 . A ratio between I 2 and Mo as high as 0.1 and 0.2 for other transport agents was used.…”
