Chloride Penetration into Concrete under the Coupling Effects of Internal and External Relative Humidity

Abstract: Chloride penetration frequently happens in an unsaturated concrete; in this case, the chloride migration is under the coupling effects of internal moisture and external relative humidity (RH). Various chloride attack tests were designed in this paper to investigate the effects of internal moisture and external RH (50–100%) on the chloride penetration into an unsaturated concrete, and the chloride content was determined to quantify the chloride migration in concrete. The results highlighted that there was a goo… Show more

“…Reinforced concrete structures are very vulnerable to chloride ion ingress, which can result in steel corrosion [ 104 ]. When steel bars corrode due to chloride-induced corrosion, it weakens the structure’s strength and safety by causing spalling and reducing the steel cross-sectional area.…”

“…Figure 5 shows the chloride diffusion coefficient over time. Assuming that t 1 is 20 d, the relative ratio of the chloride diffusion coefficient is averaged under three temperatures for 20 d, 40 d, and 60 d. Equation (15) was fitted to determine the empirical coefficient α of 0.65.…”
