Chloroplast DNA Variation in Some Representatives of the Asian, North American and Mediterranean Firs (Abies spp)

Abstract: Using PCR-RFLP analysis, a comparative study on the restriction site polymorphism within 8 genes and regions of the Abies chloroplast DNA has been conducted covering 15 Asian, 6 North American and 7 Mediterranean species. A variable degree of divergence was observed among individual species of a given region as well as between geographical groups. A group of the Mediterranean firs, consisting of closely related species, differed profoundly from both Asian and North American representatives. Although a higher l… Show more

“…Due to the allopatric distribution of Mediterranean Abies, our marker with low evolutionary rates and transmission by seeds, is suited to differentiate species or species groups of interest. This requirement is not fulfilled by paternally inherited cpDNA variants as several variants occur within Abies species and many of them are shared among species (PARDUCCI and SZMIDT, 1999;KORMUTAK et al, 2004;LIEPELT et al, unpublished data).…”

“…Abies alba sampies were also taken in Mount Martinier-La Mascarina in the municipality of Forcayo EI Comato (AAI-5), in the province of Huesca, and sampies of A. numidica from the wood collection ofthe Royal Botanic Garden, Kew (K-Jw 18393) and the Nationaal Herbarium Nederland (UNI92) were also used for comparison with the pinsapo fir wood, as the Mediterranean fir group is a c10sed group and is very differentiated from the groups in Asia and North America (Kormutak et al 2004). In addition, this group supports the hypothesis of hybridisation in the fir species (Conte & Cristofolini 2003).…”

“…Frequent hybridization between Picea mariana and P. rubens, for example, creates numerous intermediate forms that are difficult to distinguish from parental species (Bouillé et al 2011). Hybridization has been reported as frequent in some genera of Pinaceae (Lanner and Van Devender 1998;Semerikov and Lascoux 2003;Kormatak et al 2004;Bouillé et al 2011;Xiang et al 2015), but there is little evidence for current hybridization in Tsuga. Tsuga caroliniana and T. canadensis are partially sympatric, but hybrids have not been documented.…”
