Chloryl fluoride and its derivatives

Abstract: A new preparation of chloryl fluoride from alkali chlorates and bromineThe fluoride forms solid 1 : 1-compounds with boric These are regarded as chloronium (CIO,+) salts.trifluoride is reported. and antimonic fluorides. The preparation of other oxy-halogen cations is discussed.

“…Chloryl fluoride FC102 was prepared according t o Woolf (15) by reaction of KCIO, with BrF, in a monel metal reactor. For the preparation of (CI02)2SnF6 the method of Schmeisser and Fink (16) was adopted with alterations and without the use of CFC1, as a solvent.…”

“…Recently a simpler and safer method for the preparation of pure AuF3 directly from the elements was published (31). Gold trifluoride is a highly reactive material, decomposing in water with evolution of heat forming Au(OH)3 and HF (32) and also reacting violently with organic compounds, often causing ignition of the material! The solidstate structure of AuF3 was first studied by X-ray powder diffraction, where it became apparent that the material was structurally very different from AuCl3 (33).…”

“…Chloryl fluoride, FCIO, (2), and its reaction products with strong Lewis acids such as BF,, AsF,, and SbF, (3)(4)(5) are colorless, moderately reactive compounds. On the other hand, chloryl fluorosulphate, C10,-SO,F (3,5), and dichloryl trisulfate, (C10,),-S3Ol0 (6), are deep red colored solids at room temperature and are highly reactive compounds. The red color in these compounds fades to a faint yellow at liquid air temperature.…”
