Chokeberry (A. melanocarpa (Michx.) Elliott)—A Natural Product for Metabolic Disorders?

Abstract: Abnormal metabolism of substances in the body can result in metabolic disorders which include obesity, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, hypertension, chronic kidney disease, liver disease, or cancer. Foods rich in antioxidants can help to prevent and treat various types of disorders. Chokeberry fruits are rich in polyphenols, especially cyanidins, and therefore, can show a beneficial health effect. The aim of this study was to summarize and systematize reports about the effects of chokeberry on various metab… Show more

“…Aronia berries are rich in antioxidant phenolic compounds that show anti-inflammatory activity, which may be translated into potential preventive and therapeutic effects for metabolic disorder, as well as for cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular, kidney, and liver diseases [71,72]. Phenolic natural products also regulate carbohydrate and lipid metabolism and blood sugar and reduce insulin resistance, oxidative stress, and inflammation, and thus they have attracted wide interest in the potential control and prevention of diabetes [73,74].…”

“…In the past, a number of studies focused on the importance of the insulin resistance for hyperuricemia, bringing as link a fructose intake excess [47][48][49]. To date, several polyphenols have been tested as SUA-lowering agents and have been recognized for their ability to reduce the SUA levels through the inhibition of xanthine oxidase and renal urate transporters [50][51][52].…”

“…A. melanocarpa [ 162 , 163 , 164 , 165 ] and L. caerulea [ 24 , 82 , 121 , 166 ] are among the medicinal plants for which the literature reports multiple beneficial effects. Therefore, many bioactive compounds are extracted from these plants and are encapsulated into controlled release systems [ 167 , 168 , 169 , 170 , 171 , 172 , 173 ].…”
