Cholesterol Abnormalities are Common in Women with Prior Gestational Diabetes

Abstract: Objectives: The primary objective was to investigate the prevalence of persisting diabetes and high cholesterol in postpartum women with prior Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM). Research design and methods:All women with a diagnosis of GDM who delivered from April 2010 to 30 June 2012, at Joondalup Health Campus were included in the study. “…Table (2) showed the mean of GDM pregnancy to be (224.50±7.68 mg/dl), while in a healthy pregnancy is (184.80±4.34 mg/dl). The increase of total cholesterol level in the serum of women with GDM in the current study supports the results study of Quinlivan and Lam 26 , and its rise can be attributed to the occurrence of a disorder of fat metabolism ((Dyslipidemia) as a result of the disease 27 . Several studies have shown approaches during the and beyond the pregnancy, adverse metabolic consequences of diabetes 28 .…”

“…Women with prior GDM are known to have a higher prevalence of cardiovascular disease and occurrence of CVD events at a younger age. 19,20 One study shows that there is a link between women GDM or a family history of type 2 diabetes mellitus and their CVD risk. Results from this study showed that women were at a significantly increased risk of developing CVD at a young age.…”

“…Centres where the obstetric population has a higher incidence of obesity may report an increase in the incidence in GDM utilising the new diagnostic criteria. However, it is likely that this reflects a genuine increase in metabolic pathology, as obesity is a major risk factor for GDM and adverse pregnancy outcome [ 14 ].…”
