Cholesterol gallstones: Focusing on the role of interstitial Cajal-like cells

Abstract: Cholesterol gallstone (CG) is a common, frequent biliary system disease in China, with a complex and multifactorial etiology. Declined gallbladder motility reportedly contributes to CG pathogenesis. Furthermore, interstitial Cajal-like cells (ICLCs) are reportedly present in human and guinea pig gallbladder tissue. ICLCs potentially contribute to the regulation of gallbladder motility, and aberrant conditions involving the loss of ICLCs and/or a reduction in its pacing potential and reactivity to cholecystokin… Show more

“…Cholecystic contractile function is enhanced as the CCK level increases; a decrease in the CCK level and its concomitant gallbladder contraction dysfunction are important pathological mechanisms leading to the formation of gallstones[ 21 ]. CCK-A receptors are found in gallbladder smooth muscle, and CCK binding to CCK-A receptors plays a vital role in gallbladder motility.…”

“…With advances in recent research, it has been found that Interstitial Cells of Cajal (ICCs) play an important role in maintaining the normal motility of the gallbladder ( Huang et al, 2009 ; Fu et al, 2021 ). For example, in guinea pigs with cholesterol cholelithiasis, the density and ultrastructure of ICCs in the gallbladder are altered ( Huang et al, 2021 ).…”

“…It has a large financial burden on the healthcare economy, and GDs are influenced by an interaction of complicated environmental and genetic factors [ 12 ]. About 10%–15% of the global adult population is influenced by GDs because it is a highly prevalent gastroenterological disorder [ 13 , 14 ]. It is not lethal, but it can result in severe GIT disorders leading to many serious complications and outcomes, such as pancreatitis, gallbladder cancer, and acute GSs [ 15 ].…”
