Cholesterol sulfate alters astrocyte metabolism and provides protection against oxidative stress

Abstract: Introduction Cholesterol sulfate (CS) is one of the most important known sterol sulfates in human plasma and present as a normal constituent in a variety of human tissues. In both the brain and periphery, CS serves as a substrate for the synthesis of sulfonated adrenal steroids such as pregnenolone sulfate and Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) sulfate and as a constituent of many biological membranes including red blood cells where it functions as a stabilizing agent. It also acts as endogenous regulator of choles… Show more

“…Subsequently, the membranes were washed with 1× TBST three times and incubated with secondary antibodies for 2 h at room temperature. Next, the membranes were scanned using the Odyssey ® CLx Imaging System (LI-COR Biosciences, United States) (Prah et al 2019 ; Li et al 2020b ). Finally, the gray values of the bands were compared using ImageJ software and GraphPad Prism 8.0.1 software.…”

“…Increased mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation in primary astrocyte cultures following cholesterol sulfate treatment enhanced neuroprotective potential of astrocytes (Prah et al, 2019). The same study also found decreased phosphorylation of AMPK in astrocytes, which is a key regulator of glycolysis.…”

“…As early as in 1976, cholesterol sulfate was shown closely related to rat brain development 10 . Recently, cholesterol sulfate has been further shown had protective role against oxidative stress in brain astrocyte 11 . In addition, abnormal lipid expression is closely associated with various brain diseases 9 .…”
