Chondrosarcoma Metastasis to the Choroid

Abstract: We report a rare case of chondrosarcoma metastatic to the choroid. A 64-year-old male with a history of chondrosarcoma metastatic to the lungs and to the spine presented with blurred vision. A choroidal tumor was found. Fine-needle biopsy confirmed the histologic identity of the tumor as chondrosarcoma. Metastatic spread of chondrosarcoma to the eye is extremely rare. When present, lesions may grow rapidly, and systemic prognosis is poor. Co-management with medical oncology is of utmost importance. This is the… Show more

“… 9 Interestingly, the fundus imaging and presentation of our patient resembles a chondrosarcoma choroidal metastasis case, with both patients presenting with a large, single, nodular, amelanotic lesion, with associated subretinal fluid. 10 This points to possible common features shared by bone sarcomas metastasizing to the eye.…”

“…Indeed, cases of metastasis to the testis, thyroid and choroid have been well described. 11,12,13 Gastric neoplasms are almost entirely primary tumors, mainly represented by gastric adenocarcinomas. 14 However, rare cases of secondary gastric neoplasms are described in the literature, most of them of the breast, lung, renal cell cancer, and melanoma.…”

“…The course and prognosis of this disease varies widely depending on the tumor grade and type. Metastasis is primarily to the lungs but has been documented to other bones and rarely other sites such as the skin and the eye 2–4 . The primary treatment in humans has been surgical removal of the tumor 5,6 .…”

“…Metastasis is primarily to the lungs but has been documented to other bones and rarely other sites such as the skin and the eye. [2][3][4] The primary treatment in humans has been surgical removal of the tumor. 5,6 Local recurrence rate varies but seems to be around 33% 7 and often necessitates further surgery, though its effect on overall prognosis is unclear.…”
