Chong-Chet Anterior Scoring Technique for the Correction of Prominent Ears: Results in 30 Patients

Abstract: A lot ofotoplasty techniques have been developed during the past years. However, there is no single perfect technique which is worldwide accepted. We present our assessment of a Chong-Chet anterior scoring technique for the correction of prominent ears which we applied in 30 patients between 2005 and 2010. This study is a report of creating a natural fold of cartilage using Chong-Chet anterior scoring technique by cartilage incision at the border between the antihelix and scapha, with medial scoring of the sca… Show more

“…The external ear has a very complex structure; therefore, a good preoperative assessment is very important when choosing the right method [8] . Correction of protruding prominent ears is a routine intervention with many successful results [7] . The most common problem encountered during ear correction surgery is the absence of an antihelix and an increased angle between the auricle and the mastoid portion of the temporal bone (increased scaphomastoid angle).…”

“…The skin was then detached from the anterior cartilage in the antihelix region in the direction of the concha auriculae, which was incised parallel to the incision edge, and the newly formed antihelix was stabilized with 3, 4-0 Vicryl sutures. When the formation is completed, the wound is closed with a non-absorbable single suture [ 7 ] or a fast-absorbing suture.…”

“…Over the years, many surgeons have described a combination of both techniques to manage different factors in a prominent ear deformity with full-thickness trans-cartilaginous multiple incision. The aim was to create the antihelical fold and decrease the conchal hypertrophy with the expected results of weekend auricular cartilage and the possibility of apparent incision sites from the thin skin of the anterior surface of the auricle [10][11][12][13].…”

“…The abnormal appearance of prominent ear usually presents early in life, as 85% of auricular growth is completed by the age three years [2,3] . Prominent ear (Protruding or lop ear) is characterized by an increase in the cephalo-auricular angle, which occurs due to an immature antihelical fold; an excessive conchal cartilage; or abnormal attachment of the auricle to the side of the head, alone or in combination [4] .…”
