Chorioptic mange in dairy cattle: treatment with eprinomectin pour-on

Abstract: A randomized block design study was conducted to confirm the efficacy of topical eprinomectin against naturally acquired Chorioptes bovis mite infestations. Twelve adult Simmentaler Fleckvieh cattle were formed into six replicates of two animals based on pretreatment mite counts. Within replicates, animals were randomly allocated to untreated controls or were treated with eprinomectin 0.5% pour-on solution at 1 mL/10 kg body weight (0.5 mg eprinomectin/kg body weight). Live mites were counted, and mange lesion… Show more

“…Clinical signs include crusty lesions in the root of the tail and the grooves on either side, and tend to be localized with moderate pruritus present. Initially starting with a varnished surface, later the affected area is covered with fine, dry scales which can spread towards the perineum, escutcheon, inner sides of the thighs, and fetlocks [7]. Irritation and itching become intense when lesions extend in size and coalesce to form crusts and heavy scabs that can spread even to the sacral region and the udder.…”

“…Mites in scrapings collected from the edges of active lesions were counted as described by Rehbein et al [7]. Scrapings were made using a sharp spoon from an area approximately 3 × 3 cm, and 6 sites were scraped on each animal.…”

“…Chorioptic mange is considered to be the most common form of scabies in the northern hemisphere and is caused by Chorioptes bovis (C. bovis) (HERING, 1845) and Chorioptes texanus (HIRST, 1924) (REHBEIN et al, 2005). Both species have been recorded in cattle in Brazil (FACCINI & MASSARD, 1976;FACCINI & LEITE, 1996).…”

“…However, among animals that remain confined throughout the year, the lesions tend to persist to varying degrees. These lesions begin at the root of the tail (REHBEIN et al, 2005). The diagnosis of scabies is based on the history of the disease, clinical signs and laboratory confirmation through identification of the mites in skin scrapings (YERUHAM et al, 1999).…”
