Choroid plexus carcinoma: Report of one case with favourable response to treatment

Abstract: Choroid plexus carcinoma (CPC) is a rare tumor with usually severe prognosis, whose optimal treatment has not yet been established. The exact role of complete surgical resection, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy has been debated but not clarified. We report one girl with CPC diagnosed at age 3 months and apparently cured with minimal surgical resection, chemotherapy, and delayed irradiation. At the age of 8 years, she is well, with minor psychomotor retardation and growth hormone deficiency as the only sequelae.

“…Interestingly, the metastasis which was present at the moment of diagnosis disappeared under chemotherapy whereas ten months after surgery several intracerebral, spinal and cranial leptomeningeal metastases had occurred. Reviewing the literature, leptomenin geal seeding of the tumor can disappear after craniospinal radiotherapy (54,56,59), whereas chemotherapy is less favor able (1,10,24,52). …”

“…As a result, the use of presurgical chemotherapy, which is able to diminish its vascular response and in turn to facilitate its surgical removal, has been an important advance in the treatment of choroid plexus carcinoma. Furthermore, recent reports suggest that systemic chemotherapy can be of value even in patients with partially resected tumors, with or without the association of radiotherapy [8, 9, 11, 12, 13, 14]. In most of the cases, chemotherapy consisted of a variable combination of alkylating agents, etoposide, vincristine and platinum compounds; the regimen of eight drugs in 1 day has also been used [14].…”

“…Brain tumors in young patients are commonly considered chemosensitive [5, 6, 7], and several studies indicate that patients with choroid plexus carcinoma can benefit from chemotherapy, either alone or in combination with radiotherapy, and this treatment was demonstrated to decrease tumor volume before surgical removal and/or to extend postoperative survival [4, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14]. …”
