Chromatographic fingerprinting and related chemometric techniques for quality control of traditional Chinese medicines

Abstract: Development of chromatographic fingerprint (CF) and related chemometric methods and their applications to quality control of traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) were discussed. CF is essentially a kind of quality control method for TCMs (or Chinese herbal medicines). Also, it is a quality-relevant-data high-throughput and integral tool to explore chemically the complexity of TCMs. With the help of chemometrics, some difficulties in evaluation and analysis of CFs, such as calculation of information content, pe… Show more

“…Multivariate statistical methods are extensively used to aid in pattern recognition due to the often large amount and complex nature of the data produced by multi-pattern approaches [69]. These statistical methods are greatly affected by the quality of the data ('garbage in, garbage out'), and are often used in conjunction with a 'pre-processing' method in order to minimize any instrumental contribution to the variation between samples, such as instrumental noise and retention time variations [70].…”

Many concerns, especially quality controls [5][6][7] and pathological mechanisms [8] of Chinese medicines, have been discussed in papers.…”

“…Therefore, the European Medicines Agency and US Food and Drug Administration recommend a chromatographic fingerprinting technique [6,7] in order to assess the quality, stability and authenticity of herbal medicines. This approach provides a chromatographic pattern of the extract [8] which presents multiple chemical components and their relative concentrations. The information gathered from the fingerprint is much more comprehensive than that provided from the typical approach which focuses on the identity and quantitative assay of individual constituents [9].…”
