Chromatography paper strip sampling of enteric adenoviruses type 40 and 41 positive stool specimens

Abstract: Background: The enteric subgroup F adenoviruses type 40 (Ad40) and 41 (Ad41) are the second most important cause of acute infantile gastroenteritis after rotaviruses. Repeated community outbreaks have been associated with antigenic changes among the Ad40 and Ad41 strains due to host immune pressure. Therefore large field epidemiological surveys and studies on the genetic variations in different isolates of Ad40 and Ad41 are important for disease control programs, the design of efficient diagnostic kits and vac… Show more

“…Vibrio cholerae could be cultured from dried stool spots after 14 days if humid conditions were maintained129 and was equivalent to standard transport medium. Viral enteric pathogens, including Norovirus, Rotavirus, and Adenovirus serotypes 40 and 41, were detected by NAAT from dried stool spots on chromatography paper, with good concordance with enzyme immunoassay (EIA) performed directly on stool 130132. Pre-treating the paper with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)/ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) inactivated the virus, allowing safe handling of the paper.…”

“…HAdVs have been linked to a wide range of community and institutional disease outbreaks and have been isolated from practically all human organ systems (Lu et al 2014). They are considered one of the most important pathogenic viral agents of infantile gastroenteritis after rotavirus (Zlateva et al 2005; Mans et al 2010; Elhag et al 2013). There are presently 69 recognised genotypes of HAdV.…”
