Chromosomal aberrations and CNVs in twin fetuses with cardiovascular anomalies: Comparison between monochorionic diamniotic and dichorionic diamniotic twins

Abstract: Most of cardiovascular anomalies were identified in one fetus of a twin pair no matter in MCDA or DCDA twin. Primary cardiac structural defects were more common in DCDA group. Monozygotic twins may have discordant phenotypes, karyotypes, and CNVs between 2 fetuses of each pair.

“…Group B: A total of 44 were secondarily excluded from quantitative analysis. Of these, 34 dealt with specific single-district malformations , 2 included postnatal cases [120,121], 3 dealt only with cases from fetuses' demise or livebirths [122][123][124], 3 did not provide a proper distinction between US features [125][126][127], 1 dealt familial cases of heart disease [128], and 1 concerned twin pregnancies [129]. A total of 71 papers were eligible for quantitative analysis [6,: 44 were retrospective studies, 12 were prospective, and 15 did not declare pro-or retrospectivity.…”

“…5,7 Among all twin gestations, the incidence of malformations appears to be greater in monozygotic than in dizygotic twins and is more likely to occur in only one twin. [1][2][3][4] The twins in the present study represent a deviation from this paradigm.…”

“…Regardless of the method of conception, however, twin gestations themselves have been associated with an increased risk of congenital malformations. [1][2][3][4] We present the case of dizygotic twins conceived via in vitro fertilisation both with Tetralogy of Fallot and additional cardiac and extracardiac malformations.…”

“…Some of the cases in this study have been included in studies published previously from our center. Specifically, 89 pairs of twins (29 MC and 60 dichorionic (DC)), reported in the study of Zhang et al . that focused on twins with cardiovascular anomalies, were included in our cohort.…”

Specifically, 89 pairs of twins (29 MC and 60 dichorionic (DC)), reported in the study of Zhang et al 20 that focused on twins with cardiovascular anomalies, were included in our cohort. Eight pairs of twins with discordant karyotypes, reported in the study of Shi et al 21 on aneuploidy in twins, were included in the present study and 215 twin pairs overlapped between the two study populations.…”
