Chromosomal characterization of Arvicanthis species (Rodentia, Murinae) from western and central Africa: implications for taxonomy

Abstract: A chromosome study of unstriped grass rats of the genus Arvicanthis (Rodentia, Murinae) in western and central Africa is presented. The observations extend the data available to 242 specimens from 59 localities. All individuals karyotyped belong to four karyotypic forms, or cytotypes, earlier described as ANI-1, ANI-2, ANI-3, and ANI-4 and are presumed to correspond to four distinct species. In order to provide diagnostic characters for these western and one central African Arvicanthis species, we standardized… Show more

“…Two karyotyped specimens, 1 male and 1 female, yielded a diploid number of 2n562 and a NFa574 ( Figure 5). By diploid number and chromosome sub-metacentric morphology they corresponded unambiguously to A. ansorgei sensu Volobouev et al (2002a). These three individuals were both caught near water, on a small island in Koumbani and close to flooded rice fields in Mankountan and in Kaback.…”

“…In Senegal, A. ansorgei inhabits the region south of Gambia River and the holotype comes from Gunnal in Guinea Bissau (Thomas 1910). The species was known in grasslands and bush from Gambia (Fadda & Corti 2001), S. Senegal (Casamance, Kedougou, Pondala in Granjon et al 1992;Volobouev et al 2002a), S.W. Mali (Katibougou, Samaya, Farabana, Djaliba in Volobouev et al 2002a), Burkina Faso and Niger (Dobigny et al 2002b), S. Chad (Fadda & Corti 2001) and Benin (Capanna et al 1997).…”

“…For details on geographic origin, sex and number of animals of the genus Arvicanthis studied, as well as the types of chromosomal analyses applied, see Volobouev et al (2002). For similar data on the genus Acomys see Volobouev et al (1991), Volobouev et al (1996a, b) and Kunze et al (1999).…”

“…In contrast, however, enzymatic, chromosomal and molecular data argue for the presence of four sibling species provisionally labeled as ANI-1, ANI-2, ANI-3 and ANI-4 (see Ducroz, 1998;Volobouev et al, 2002).…”
