Chromosomal Variation, Segregation and Sex Determination in Hydrotaea Meridionalis (Diptera: Muscidae)

Abstract: In addition to five pairs of euchromatic chromosomes common to all individuals, three different morphological types of heterochromatic chromosomes were found in Hydrotaea meridionalis: Two acrocentric chromosomes of different length and a smaller submetacentric chromosome that occur in different combinations. The most common type, the larger of the acrocentric chromosomes, occurred as a pair in 149 out of 197 larvae. Mother‐offspring combinations revealed that the larvae progeny of several mothers carried morp… Show more

“…This hypothesis is supported by some cytological findings. The species in the H. irritans group, consisting of H. irritans , H. pandellei , H. pellucens , H. borussica and H. meridionalis , all show some peculiarities concerning variation in chromosome number and type (Loeschcke et al. 1993, 1994) that are not found in more distantly related Hydrotaea species.…”

“…Further, genetic studies have revealed some peculiarities within the genus Hydrotaea (Robineau–Desvoidy). Evidence for autosomal sex determination in Hydrotaea meridionalis (Loeschcke et al. 1993) and related species (Loeschcke et al.…”

“…albipuncta and H. borussica. Adult gonads or neural ganglia from 6-8 weeks old third instar larvae were used for chromosome preparations following standard procedures including C-or G-band staining (MACGREGOR and VARLEY 1983; for details see LOESCHCKE et al 1993). The remains of the adult flies or larvae were frozen (-70°C) for later use in electrophoresis.…”
