Chromosome banding in Picea IV. Comparative karyotype analysis of fluorescent band patterns in 25 taxa

Abstract: ABSTRACT:In 25 taxa of Picea the somatic chromosomes were analyzed by a fluorescent banding technique using chromomycin A 3 (CMA) and DAPI. They had 2n=24 chromosome number and similar karyotypes among species. On metaphase chromosomes in each taxon the CMA-bands appeared at the interstitial and centromeric regions. DAPI-bands appeared on chromosomes of some species. The CMA-band pattern of each taxon was described after identification of most homologous chromosomes and compared among taxa. An alignment of spe… Show more

“…In 25 species of Picea studied, many CMA bands were observed both at interstitial and centromeric positions while DAPI bands were absent in some species (Table 3), and interestingly the CMA band pattern shows broad congruence with the geographical distribution (Hizume, 2017). Large number of CMA bands, 5-14 interstitial and 4-8 centromeric, characterize American and Arctic -Eurasian species while East-Asian species have less number of interstitial (4-6) and centromeric (0-5) bands (Hizume, 2017). A distinct feature of Picea karyotypes is the presence of two closely occurring CMA bands on one of the arms in a pair (Hizume, 2017).…”

“…Some species have been studied in different parts of the range, in normal and extreme conditions: Near borders of the ranges of the species, in the swamps, in the mountains, and in the regions of anthropogenic influence. Literature data are used for karyological characteristics of the other spruce species (Kruklis, 1971;Pravdin et al, 1976;Liu & Li, 1985;Hizume, 1988Hizume, , 2017Hizume et al, 1988Hizume et al, , 1989Broka, 1990;Shi & Wang 1994;Farukshina et al, 1997;Li et al, 2001;Shibata & Hizume, 2008;and others). According to the classification of morphological types of chromosomes Picea species contain eight pairs long of metacentric chromosomes and four pairs are short meta-or submetacentric ones.…”
