Chromosome evolution and phylogeny in Ronderosia (Orthoptera, Acrididae, Melanoplinae): clues of survivors to the challenge of sympatry?

Abstract: In an attempt to unveil the origin of neo-sex chromosomes in Ronderosia Cigliano grasshoppers, we performed a combined phylogenetic analysis based on morphological (external morphology and male genitalia) and molecular data (COI, COII, 16S and ITS2) to explore the chromosome evolution within the genus. We also analysed the distributional patterns of the various Ronderosia species and considered the possible role of chromosome rearrangements (CRs) in speciation processes within the genus in the light of 'suppre… Show more

“…Karyotypic analyses reveal that species in the subfamilies Calliptaminae, Eyprepocnemidinae, Melanoplinae, Oedipodinae, Gomphocerinae, Acridinae, Thrinchinae, and Pyrgomorphinae normally exhibit the X0/XX karyotype (Hewitt, 1979), which may explain the difference in genome size between the sexes. Moreover, the analyses of genome size in evolutionary lineages with neo-sex chromosomes (Mesa et al, 1982;Castillo et al, 2010Castillo et al, , 2019Jetybayev et al, 2017) could help to understand several issues about genome size evolution in Caelifera. However, it is too early to explain the subtle divergences in nuclear DNA content between males and females of Caelifera.…”

“…Such scenarios may explain the elimination of centromeres and heterochromatin toward the B. sinicus karyotype, and has been suggested for many monocentric organisms, such as the plant Arabidopsis thaliana (Linnaeus, 1758) ( Lysak et al 2006 ), the flatworm Aspidogaster limacoides Diesing, 1834 ( Bombarová et al 2015 ), the pangolin Manis javanica (Desmarest, 1822) ( Nie et al 2009 ), the mouse Akodon Meyen, 1833 ( Ventura et al 2009 ), the grasshopper Ronderosia Cigliano, 1997 ( Orthoptera , Acrididae ) ( Castillo et al 2019 ), the beetle Dichotomius Hope, 1838 ( Coleoptera , Scarabaeidae ) ( Cabral-de-Mello et al 2011 ), and the ants Myrmicinae ( Cardoso et al 2014 ). Based on the phylogeny of the Chinese Bittacidae (YM, unpublished data), we speculate that the cytogenetic features observed in B.…”
