Chromosomes of Acanthocephalus lucii

Abstract: Chromosomes of Acanthocephalus lucii (Muller, 1776) were observed using conventional staining techniques. The number of chromosomes in females and in their developing eggs (2n = 8) as well as the mean (La) and relative length (Lr) of the chromosomes and the localization of the centromere (Ic) were determined. Peculiarities in the behaviour of the chromosomes are also described.

“…Comparing our results with recently published data from the distant population of A. lucii from Bulgaria (Mutafova et al 1997), the most essential difference is an absence of supernumerary chromosomes in the Bulgarian worms. The gross morphology of individual chromosome pairs from the Slovak and Bulgarian acanthocephalans differed slightly and can be interpreted in terms of intraspecific variability.…”

“…Our data represent the first record of B chromosomes in thorny-headed worms. A possible relationship between the occurrence of B chromosomes and a heavy metal accumulation in acanthocephalan tissue from contaminated aquatic environments is briefly discussed.A karyotype of Acanthocephalus lucii (Palaeacanthocephala: Echinorhynchidae), a common parasite of freshwater fishes of the Palearctic region, was previously described by Mutafova et al (1997). A female diploid chromosome set consisted of eight submeta-metacentric (pairs 1, 2) and subtelocentric (pairs 3, 4) chromosomes.…”

“…In contrast, a distant population of A. lucii from Bulgaria possessed no supernumerary chromosomes (Mutafova et al, 1997). A parallel study revealed that tissues of B carrier A. lucii specimens contained excess levels of mutagenic elements (cadmium, arsenic and lead) in concentrations 16, 60 and 85 times higher than those in the liver of the host fish (Turčeková et al, 2002).…”
