Chromotropisms of Imidazole Derivatives. III. Crystal Structure of 4,5-Bis(4-methoxyphenyl)-2-(4-nitrophenyl)-1H-imidazole

Abstract: The molecular and crystal structure of the title compound was determined by the single-crystal X-ray analysis. The crystal is orthorhombic with a space group Pbca, a=15.161 (9), b=25.805 (5), c=9.948 (1) Å, and Z=8. The 4-nitrophenyl ring is nearly on a same plane with the imidazole ring, while the other two benzene rings make angles of 26.5° and 47.7°.

“…Host-guest binding events detected by colour changes resulting from associated conformational changes and thus shifts in energy of electronic transitions have been reported for a few imidazole compounds 7 and boronic acid derivatives. 8 We have reported the synthesis and guest-responsive colour changes of chromogenic host compounds, 3-{2-[2-(3-hydroxy-3,3-diphenyl-prop-1-ynyl)-phenylazo]-phenyl}-1,1-diphenylprop-2-yn-1-ol (1), 3-{3-[3-(3-hydroxy-3,…”

“…The detection of host:guest binding events by colour changes resulting from associated conformational changes and thus shifts in energy of electronic transitions have been reported for a few imidazole compounds. 5 In an earlier communication we reported the synthesis and guest responsive colour changes of a chromogenic host compound, 3-{4-[4-(3-hydroxy-3, 3-diphenylprop-1-ynyl)phenylazo]phenyl}-1,1-diphenylprop-2-yn-1-ol 3. 6 We now report the preparation and complexation behaviour of a further two host compounds in this series, namely, 3-{2-[2-(3-hydroxy-3,3-diphenylprop-1-ynyl)phenylazo]phenyl}-1,1-diphenylprop-2-yn-1-ol 1 and 3-{3-[3-(3-hydroxy-3,3-diphenylprop-1-ynyl)phenylazo]phenyl}-1,1-diphenylprop-2-yn-1-ol 2.…”

“…The chemistry of lophine derivatives has a long history in relation to important physicochemical phenomena such as chemiluminescence through its oxidation and photo-, piezoand thermochromic properties (Zimmerman et al, 1961;Maeda & Hayashi, 1969, 1970. Only a few imidazole analogues or nitro derivatives of lophine are known (Inouye & Sakaino, 1985, 1986Sakaino, Fujii et al, 1990;Sakaino, Shimizu et al, 1990;Kaftory et al, 1998;Bu et al, 2003). The spectral properties of lophine derivatives are of interest: the colour change is dependent on the solvation in the crystal and in different derivatives.…”
